While many people believe that the divorce rate in the US is hovering around 50%, we’re happy to say that the data simply doesn’t support that idea. In fact, according to many studies, the divorce rate has been falling in recent decades.
According to the New York Times, “Despite hand-wringing about the institution of marriage, marriages in this country are stronger today than they have been in a long time. The divorce rate peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s and has been declining for the three decades since…There are many reasons for the drop in divorce, including later marriages, birth control and the rise of so-called love marriages.”
While all of this is great news for many couples, the risk of divorce still exists. After polling divorce lawyers from all over the country, the Huffington Post put together their findings. It turns out that if you experience any of these problems in your relationships, you may be on the fast-track to trouble.
Do you and your S.O. do any of these things?
- Shutting down and giving the silent treatment.
- Having nothing in common with each other.
- A sex life that is less than stellar.
- Not putting family first.
- You don’t know your partner’s “love language.”
- You’re not honest about spending habits.
- You never fight.
So why are these such strong signs of a marriage (possibly) headed for trouble? While some are more obvious than others, most of these problems are indicators that there’s work to be done about the way you relate to and communicate with your significant other.
