The world’s first man with a successful penis transplant has recently announced that his girlfriend is pregnant! Dr. Andre van der Merwe of Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa, told CNN on Friday that his patient told him the woman is about four months pregnant. Following severe complications from a circumcision during a South African coming-of-age ceremony, the patient required drastic surgery.
The surgeons and doctors who performed the original penis transplant in early December of 2014 had estimated that the full recovery of function would take up to two years. The patient (whose identity is not released for ethical reasons) healed much faster than expected and doctors officially called the surgery a success in March when all “urinary and reproductive functions” were restored.
