“Shirime” – Eyeball Anus Monster

So…there’s a Japanese myth about a monster called “Shirime,” a mystical ‘person’ who has an eyeball where an anus should be. According to the story, a samurai was walking down the street and heard someone call out to him to wait. Startled, the samurai turned around and saw a man taking off his clothes, bending over, and revealing a giant, “glittering eye” where an anus should have been. According to one source, “the poet and artist Buzon included the shirime in his collection “Buzon’s Yokai Picture Scroll” (蕪村妖怪絵巻), which is the only known source of the story.”

And as bizarre as this character/monster/kind of human shirime is, it’s meant to be harmless. Apparently, shirime “just think it’s fun to surprise people.”…Dually noted, Japan.
